No other country can fish in UK waters according to new arrangement.
With Brexit talks continuing, an aggressive new stance will no doubt complicate feelings.
A new arrangement will now stop the French, Dutch, Belgians and German from fishing in our waters, according to the new Environmental Secretary Michael Gove. Originally vessels from these countries could fish from within 6 and 12 nautical miles (about 7-14 actual miles) but this change is said to be part of the government “taking back control”. Some sources say that it will be impossible to fish up to 200 miles away from the coast.
The point is apparently the need to decide who is using our waters and the hope is that our fishing industry is more sustainable. The rules which are being followed seem to predate the entry of the EU for several years.
Both Greenpeace and ClientEarth have spoken against the new policy. Greenpeace spoke of using EU as a scapegoat whenever the government fails to support the small fisherman. ClientEarth speak of it as an aggressive tactic, believing that we need to negotiate with the EU in the best way possible, rather than just blocking fishing.
It seems too that environmental protection might be compromised if this laws go ahead, as many different types of marine wildlife, not just fish, need to be protected.
