Nigel Farage tells Hungary’s PM Orbán to ‘join the Brexit club’
As political group leaders and MEPs gave their views on Hungary’s new education law, the tightening of rules for NGOs and asylum seekers, EFDD’s Nigel Farage told Hungary’s PM Viktor Orbán it’s time he organised a referendum in his country on leaving the EU.
Many MEPs took the view that the new education law, perceived as targeting the Central European University, is an attack on academic freedom and NGOs are being targeted to suppress critical voices. Others defended the Hungarian government’s moves by arguing that civil society needs rules and member states have the right to regulate education.
And then there was Nigel Farage, who took things a step forward and said it might be time for Hungary to ‘join the Brexit club.’
“These people will go on interfering in the lives of Hungarian people and you’ll never be forgiven. You are a sinner in their eyes. Not just because you want to close down George Soros’ propaganda machine that masquerades as a university, nothing to do with that. It’s because you won’t pay the price for Mrs Merkel supreme volley and sign up to migrant quotas. And they will never, ever, forgive you for it. You were bold enough to call a referendum on the migrant quotas and 88% of those that voted agreed with you, surely logic says it’s time you gave the Hungarian people a referendum on whether they stay part of the European Union or not. Who knows? You might come and joining the Brexit club, and then we can fight for a nation of democratic states, working together, trading together and put this nonsense behind us”, Farage said.
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that accusations that his government wanted to close the CEU were false and portrayed the national consultation as a democratic tool. The law on NGOs follows a US example, he added. “We would like to reform the EU, but Hungary is unquestionably committed to Europe”, Orbán said.
