Ashley Graham skipped last year’s Met Gala because no fashion designer dressed her
Ashley Graham is a stunning supermodel that continues to make a splash in the world of fashion; however, it hasn’t always been easy.
Graham doesn’t fit the typical model’s size zero and has encountered a lot of resistance from the fashion industry. In an interview with New York magazine, the model admits that she has to miss the 2016 Met Gala since she couldn’t get a designer to dress her.
Graham said she had been “on hold” to attend the red carpet event. Unfortunately, she didn’t, rather couldn’t, attend due to the lack of designers willing to work with her or finding a designer in time. “I couldn’t get a designer to dress me,” she said. “You can’t just show up in jeans and a T-shirt.”
The supermodel told New York that it wasn’t about her size; instead, she stated she hadn’t made the right connections with designers at the moment and she didn’t have enough time for a custom piece. Still, a model who wore a smaller size more than likely wouldn’t have such a tough time–or have needed a custom gown period–because designers often have sample sizes of size 0 or 2 on standby for short notices.
Several designers also refused to style Graham for the cover of British Vogue, leading to Coach loaning clothes for the cover.
Graham seems to be facing less challenges these. She commented that now, she borrows clothing from designers for every event she attends, even though the designers must know her dimensions to fit her body. Graham attended this year’s Met Gala wearing a beautiful H&M couture gown. “Rihanna said I looked ‘hot as f**k’,” Graham said. “I had no idea what to say to her. I was just like, ‘You slay every Met, Rihanna!’”
