Is first impression the best impression?
You look at a person and judge them based on their outward appearance. But they might be completely different from what you perceived them to be.
First impression is what judgement you make about a person you met for the first time. When we meet a new person we have some assumptions from their body language, their attire and the way they speak. We might not like them the instant they walk in. You tell your friend nearby that this person does not seem to look reliable. But the person will turn out to be your best friend one day.
All that is white in colour cannot be milk. Similarly, a person who looks reliable will turn out to be the exact opposite. A first impression is based on various factors like age, cultural background, gender, language, physical appearance etc. In some countries women are looked at as inferior to men. So in a male dominated environment, a women boss or leader makes a bad impression.
So can this impression be changed? Of course this can be changed. What if you made a really bad impression on your first day in your new office? Here are a few things you could do to make a lasting impression:
- Look and feel confident in whatever dress you wear.
- Maintain a good body language.
- Be polite when you talk to others and be assertive at all times.
- Don’t forget to carry a smile with you.
- Above all, do not make judgements on someone you are meeting for the first time. When you start judging others, the others will do the same to you.
First impression is definitely not the best one. You cannot judge a person in just a few seconds. It takes months, even years to understand people. Spending a lot of time with a person, living with them and knowing them for a long time helps you to understand a person. Just merely looking at them and talking to them for just five to ten minutes will not tell you what kind of a person they are.
