We’re talking years and years and years down the road, even after fixing problems.
This spells massively bad news for our entire Earth especially when looking back at such disasters as the Deepwater Horizon and other oil spills. We normally think this is just a one-time deal, and of course we take measures to protect the wildlife and nourish our oceans after disasters occur. The sad fact is in based on the newest research, though:

Oil Spills Have Been Now Shown to Affect an Entire Food Web for Years
The damage lasts far beyond the initial disaster, unfortunately. And the proof is in the pudding via the latest research from an article written in Springer’s journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology (AECT). The study documented surprising pieces of irrefutable evidence of the fact that even back in 2010 when Deepwater Horizon exploded, the abundance of fish in the Gulf of Mexico drastically went down according to current reports. And it makes perfect sense:
After all…. Once an entire ecosystem has been drastically affected, the future of that ecosystem becomes forever changed. Think of it as a bit of a domino effect — one domino down can over time cause the rest of the dominos to drop, resulting in a collapsed house. The ocean’s ecosystem, therefore, is the collapsed house.
