Olivia de Havilland is no ordinary actress. She has lived for more than a hundred years, and has starred in some of the greatest motion pictures ever made. She has also won two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. This article is a tribute to her greatness as an actress.
Born on July 1st, 1916, Olivia de Havilland was originally born in Tokyo, Japan. She became a part of Hollywood at the age of nineteen when she had her first role as Dolly Stevens in the film Alibi Ike (1935). She would later work alongside some of the greatest performers in Hollywood, such as Errol Flynn in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). She then won the role of a lifetime when she portrayed Melanie Hamilton in Gone with the Wind (1939). This film allowed de Havilland to earn her first Oscar nomination even though she lost the award to her co-star, Hattie McDaniel, who became the first black person to be nominated for, and win, an Oscar.

In spite of that initial loss, Olivia de Havilland still continued to play great roles. She won her first Oscar for To Each His Own (1946), and won again for The Heiress (1949). She also starred in the highly controversial film The Snake Pit (1948), which deals with mental illness. Ever since the 1940s, though, de Havilland failed to achieve the amount of fame she did during Hollywood’s Golden Age. Nevertheless, Olivia de Havilland really has had a remarkable career throughout the Twentieth Century.
