Feeling intimidated by the kiwi fruit? Here are a few simple methods to eat it

Sweet and tangy, packed with more vitamin C than an orange, kiwis don’t get the attention they deserve because they’re notoriously hard to eat.

Most people find the furry brown skin of the kiwi intimidating. They often pass by the kiwi fruit in the grocery store, not knowing that kiwis do not need to be peeled. “It’s similar to a peach skin, in that it is sort of fuzzy and that the flesh directly under the skin is a bit more tart than the deep insides,” Dan Nosowitz, a peel-eating expert wrote for the Awl, “but the kiwi’s skin is even thicker and thus provides even more delightful textural contrast to the green flesh within. But what about the fuzz, you ask? Surely it renders the kiwi unpleasant to eat! To that I ask this: how many people reading this post have a beard or enjoy kissing people with beards or both? I would wager there are a lot of you.”

Nosowitz advises rubbing off the extra fuzz in case there is too much. However, for those not keen on trying to eat the skin of kiwis, there are several peeling techniques, according to Tree Hugger. None of them include using a potato peeler, contrary to popular belief.

The Kiwi Push Pop method

Cut a kiwi fruit in half, then run a paring knife around the inner edge of the peel without pushing through the bottom. Squeeze the bottom and the whole half-kiwi will pop upward.

The spoon method

Cut the kiwi fruit in half, scoop out with a spoon. This is popular, despite requiring two utensils.

The quartering method

Cut the kiwi fruit in half, then in half again, but without going all the way through. This way, you can eat the fruit right out of the peel.

The knife method
