Louie the 132-year-old lobster has been freed after 20 years in a restaurant tank
After two decades spent in a tank with rubber bands around his claws, Louie the Lobster has finally been liberated and released back into the sea.
Louie has been kept in a tank at Peter’s Clam Bar in Hempstead, New York, for twenty years. A customer offered $1,000 for Louie, because he wanted to have the 22-pounds lobster for dinner on Father’s Day, according to Tree Hugger.
“He was trying to negotiate with me,” Butch Yamalli, owner of Peter’s Clam Bar, explained. “He said, ‘I want to bring it home for a Father’s Day feast.’ I mean, that would’ve been some impressive feast. But I didn’t want to sell it. It’s like a pet now, I couldn’t sell it.”

The crustation has been officially pardoned by Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino, according to Metro, in honour of National Lobster Month. “Today I’m announcing an official pardon for Louie the Lobster,” announced Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino. “Louie may have faced a buttery fate on a seafood lover’s plate, but today we are here to return Louie to a life that is better down where it’s wetter,” he added as his liberators lowered him into the sea.

Before living in a tank, Louie had 112 years to enjoy freedom. Experts believe he will be ok in his new home. “He’ll be just fine. There aren’t many predators who want to eat a big old lobster like that,” Bob Bayer, executive director of the Lobster Institute in Maine, said. “Hopefully, he finds a mate – and lives happily ever after.”
