Preparation is key to Anderlecht
Looking at how things are shaping up in Belgium right now, before a ball has even been kicked there seems to be one winner already. Not just because they are the reigning champions, most successful club and possibly, debatably the biggest club too, Anderlecht are getting their house in order pretty early and it’s starting to already look very good in Brussels.
A major factor is that René Weiler came in last season and settled quicker than snow. The Swiss won the league in his first season and has used the clout of the club to snap up some of the best players in the league in the positions needed. He bought Silvère Ganvoula M’Boussy from Westerlo in January, but loaned him back to the club.
Although Westerlo were relegated, he was the shining light. Along with that, yesterday Les Mauves bought Pieter Gerkens from Sint Truiden, possibly the best player outside of the Championship Play-Offs last season who was singlehandedly winning games with his goals. Not bad for a predominantly defensive midfielder.
Adding to those 2, he has permanently signed Lukasz Teodorczyk and Uros Spajic, who were both on loan to the club last season, meaning his spine is complete. You’d think losing Youri Tielemans to Monaco would be a huge blow, and it is as he is a spectacular player, but when Roberto Martinez told me back in April that he was definitely off to Monaco, the Brussels club has had more than enough time to look at their options.
The only other negative I can think of is what if Gerkens were brought in to replace Leander Deodoncker, the other main asset who could go on to bigger and possibly, better pastures new?
Another bonus is that their nearest rivals in Club Brugge have had a change of manager, which may let in Gent and Genk as possible title challengers above the Blauw-Zwart. I just feel that Anderlecht will be too strong now, even though Gent just broke their transfer record buying another Croatian, Franko Andrijasevic for €4 million. Champions League football could potentially be their only downfall in a long and arduous season in Belgium which begins on the 28th of July for Anderlecht.
But come May, don’t be surprised if there’s another league title in the trophy cabinet at the Constant Vanden Stock.
