DCEU box office receipts ahead of MCU thanks to Wonder Woman!
As the saying goes ‘behind every great man there is a great woman’ the DC Extended Universe’s (DCEU) Wonder Woman, the supporting character to Batman and Superman from last’s year Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, has helped the DCEU upstage the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
WARNER Brother’s DCEU is now tracking ahead of Disney’s MCU by around the same time with $218,38 million in domestic box office receipts thanks to the former’s latest installment, Wonder Woman.
In fact, with the $228,25 million bow of Wonder Woman in global box office receipts the DCEU is also tracking ahead of the MCU by $593,29 million comparatively.
According to Box Office Mojo, Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot in the title role, succeeded as it went into the weekend boasting the best reviews out of the four films that have been released in the DCEU.
“So far and the critical opinion definitely aided the film’s awareness as the buzz only continued to grow throughout the week,” Box Office Mojo said.
“Wonder Woman exceeded all expectations this weekend, delivering an impressive $100 million (actual numbers $103,25 million) opening, the largest opening for a female-directed feature, vastly out-performing the previous record holder Fifty Shades of Grey, which debuted with $85,1 million back in 2015.”
The four films released in the DCEU to date are Man of Steel in 2013, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016) and now Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman’s performance has also translated into the DCEU being ahead in terms of comparing the reported production budgets of the films and their box office receipts with films from the MCU.
Comparing the two in this regard, the DCEU is $434,29 million more than the MCU around the same time frame.
What is impressive about Wonder Woman’s performance is that the critical and audience reception is way ahead of what Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice which had both world-renowned heroes, men, in the film.
This should come as no surprise as what was considered the best parts of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, besides Batman actor Ben Affleck’s performance, was the few scenes with Wonder Woman.
The DCEU has now earned $1,04 billion in domestic box office receipts while the MCU around the same time earned $831,37 million. Globally, the DCEU has now earned $2,51 billion in box office receipts with the MCU earning $1,92 billion.
However, in terms of budget, the DCEU’s collective $799 million budget is still higher than the MCU’s $640 million. Also, all MCU films have received a rating over 65% whereas Wonder Woman is the first film to receive a universal positive rating in the DCEU.
Of course, one could argue that with the popularity of DC properties over Marvel ones the DCEU should have accomplished way more in terms of both critical and box office performance.
But, when considering that DCEU box office receipts are still higher than the ones from the MCU it should give one pause that the former’s properties are still more popular.
It also answers the other question that Warner Brothers knows exactly what they are doing.
