Chris Jericho’s official farewell?
Chris Jericho is the “Best in the World at what He does”, “The Ayatollah of Rock ‘n’ Rolla”, “The Man of 1,004 Holds, and most importantly, he’s “Y2J”. Without a doubt, Chris Jericho is one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time.
For wrestler that has a critically acclaimed career, it’s only fitting that as it ends we become aware of it.
For example, the Undertaker; we knew that Wrestlemania 33 was going to be his last. In the case of Jericho, his possible retirement came out of nowhere. In an interview with the Washington Post’s Dan Gelston, Jericho said the follow, “It’ll be a long time before I go back. If I ever do go back, if I never go back, it’s fine. If I never another match, it wouldn’t bother me.”
Now, don’t forget, Jericho is a man that has left the squared-circle several times; only for him to return. He went on a two year hiatus, between 2005 and 2007. He did this again in September 2010 to January 2012. So, this “long time” might be a year or two. If he were to come back after that time period, he’ll definitely be a part-timer. At the age of 46, his body is not in a condition to handle a full time schedule, as he will be 47 by September.
This will hurt Jericho’s fan base, but the reality is that there is nothing more for him to accomplish in WWE.
He is a multi-world champion, with countless secondary championships, and awards. On paper, the only two accolades that are not on his resume are a Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank victory. So, is there any other reason for him to continue wrestling?
One will claim that Jericho can help put talent over. Yes, that’s true, and we saw that with the likes of John Cena, AJ Styles, and Kevin Owens. Still, how will that benefit him at this point? Soon, it won’t believable to see a near 50 year old (who is actually a cruiserweight) put up a fight against younger and tougher opponents.
It’s in Jericho’s best interest to focus back on Fozzy.
One of the biggest upsides for him is the fact that he can always keep himself busy outside of wrestling. The band already has already built a name for itself. As long as the band remains active, upon Jericho’s retirement, he will have something to do right away. In short; the man wants to be prepared, before he officially hangs up his boots and his other funny accessories.
Shockingly, one of the all-time greats announced he’ll be gone from wrestling for a “long time”. It has lead many to believe that he has retired.
