Seven American classics to try if you ever find yourself in Hong Kong

If you already live in the United States of America, you are well-aware that the U.S. originated some of the best comfort foods – fried chicken, hot dogs, apple pie, etc.

However, every once in a while, creative Hong Kong chefs recreate American classic dishes that are so extravagant and out of this world (well across it anyways) that we have to give them a second look – and they will definitely heal any homesickness you might have when traveling in the Asian metropolis.

1. Pizza

Hong Kong is known for being creative with their food, and Pizza Hut Hong Kong has nailed it with this Thousand Island Seafood pie. Seafood, pineapples, and peppers on top of a crust smothered with Thousand Island dressing. If you are a fan of Thousand Island and seafood – this is for you.

2. Hot Dogs

Ah hot dogs, an American staple. Loaded with salt, and often with preservatives, hot dogs are always a popular choice for any occasion. Tsui Wah, one of Hong Kong’s popular Cha Chaan Teng (which are similar to American diners), serves up a juicy 11-inch hot dog loaded with fixings like ketchup, lettuce, tomato and the ever mysterious “traditional sauce.” Hear the July 4th fireworks?

3. Fried Chicken

Not ever knowing what the name actually stood for, Hong Kong’s PHD is the Ph.D. in fried chicken. Advertised as a pizza joint, it’s the fried chicken that truly stands out. With a crunch to every bite, the super succulent and juicy pieces of tender gloriousness are hard to resist. America would be proud.

4. Mac ‘n’ Cheese

From the stuff that comes out of a box to your mom’s special recipe, it’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t go googly eyed over mac ‘n’ cheese. There’s something about pasta mixed with cheese that has a special place in all our hearts. Hong Kong’s Stone Nullah Tavern knocked it out of the park with their spin on mac ‘n’ cheese: a dreamy, creamy combination of cheddar and macaroni, topped with chives and an egg yolk (Yes, I said egg). Oh, my I am already drooling…

5. Apple Pie

Mmm apple pie. An American classic. A warm pastry filled with a hot and oh-so-satisfying apple filling, that will instantly fill any person with nostalgia and joy. Hyatt Regency Hong Kong’s Patisserie aims to bring a little slice of heaven with their signature Sha Tin Apple Pie, baked fresh daily and made with local honey. Now that’s representing.

6. Mashed Potatoes

Opened by Chinese model and actress Angelababy, Baby Café is a travel inspired restaurant in Hong Kong. A modern and sophisticated twist on the classic American mashed potatoes make this dish stand out among the rest. The secret? The Hokkaido 3.6 milk that makes the potatoes so velvety and smooth. It’s like butta.

7. Chocolate Chip Cookie

We cannot forget about a decadent dessert! And there’s nothing like a simple good ol’ chocolate chip cookie to satisfy any sweet tooth. While Hong Kong can certainly whip up some decadent and MAJOR chocolatey chocolate chip cookies, like this one, the most epic creation has got to be Lily & Bloom’s version of America’s favorite classic dessert. Hot fudge sauce on a warm chewy cookie anyone? Don’t forget about the choice of salted caramel or vanilla ice cream to top off this “cookie.”
