This app will turn you into a dendrologist. It puts an arborist in your pocket
Have you ever walked past a tree and wished you knew what type of tree it was, but never had a pocket guide with you? If that’s the case, then the Arbor Day Foundation’s What Tree Is That? app will be just perfect for you.
Arbor Day Foundation’s What Tree Is That? is the mobile version of the Foundation’s field guide and can help people identify over 250 trees in the USA and Canada. The app uses a step by step approach in order to be as intuitive and easy to use as possible.
First of all, users need to choose their region, either Western or Eastern & Central. Afterwards, they need to select the type of leaf the tree has, such as broadleaf, for instance. Further characteristics of the leaf are being presented to the user, so that he can choose the most appropriate one, such as how easy to roll between the fingers are the leaves or whether the cones hang down (if the tree turns out to be coniferous in the beginning).
Once the app figures out the tree, it also provides you with plenty of facts and illustrations, so that you get to know the tree.
The app is available on iTunes for $4.99. As alternatives, you can purchase a regional field guide or use the free online version.
