Kendall Jenner’s Vogue India cover sparks controversy
Vogue India’s 10-year anniversary edition has stirred a lot of backlash for its failure to feature an Indian model on the cover.
The Indian version of the magazine showcased their new cover to celebrate their tenth year in print on Instagram, according to the Independent. Kendall Jenner appears on the front cover in an editorial shot by Mario Testino.
Readers and commenters were quick to condemn Vogue for their failure of putting an Indian model or actress on the cover and decided to go with a white woman instead. Some comments included:
“Why is she on the cover? You could have many beautiful women you could have hand picked from India?”
“This saddens me. It’s not to be cruel to Kendall. However, I would have loved to see a beautiful Indian lady, tradition and culture and representing the true essence with grace and respect.”

The fact that the magazine missed the opportunity of a special issue to promote the talent in their own country was heavily criticized. Within the issues, several Indian models and actresses were shown, but none of them made it to the cover.
The controversy comes amid a difficult month for Jenner. She was the star of a highly-ridiculed Pepsi advert, that used protests for profit. Furthermore, she was one of the social influencers who promoted the disastruous Fyre Festival.
