“As American as apple pie” is the first idiom that comes to mind when thinking about US cuisine. But are apple pies, peanut butter, pancakes and hamburgers still as popular in the US as they once were?A look at data from Pinterest paints a different picture.
While some staple American foods seem to have a permanent hold on our palate, other have become less popular, over time.
Pinterest looked at its users’ posts and came up with a map of the United States that highlights the most popular foods for each state. Some of the results were puzzling while others reflected the change in culture and in gastronomic trends.

For example, New York‘s most popular dish is the falafel, a Middle Eastern import consisting of a deep-fried ball, a doughnut or patty made from ground chickpeas and fava beans. The falafel balls are topped with salads, pickled vegetables, hot sauce, and drizzled with tahini-based sauces and served in pitas.
But while New Yorkers are enjoying their favorite street food, in Vermont, beets are all the rage.
And while New Hampshire is partial to its Martinis, in Connecticut, a Sicilian pastry, symbolizing fertility, has been continuously popping up in photographs shared over the internet. Maine is donuts country, while in New Jersey there’s a developing taste for Spanish Sangria.
Oddly enough, Arkansas is partial to its Coca Cola while in neighboring Louisiana, shrimp pasta is frequently served at dinner.
Texas seems to have a developing love affair with stuffed avocados while in Oklahoma, taco soup is becoming more popular than ever.
A trip in Kansas will ensure you a taste of their favourite chicken enchiladas while Minnesota was hit by a healthy wave and broccoli salads are now number one.
Wyoming is betting on energy bites while Alaskans might know something the rest of the world doesn’t as they stock up on survival bread. Washington wants more Thai chicken and Nevada is also partial to chicken , but they prefer the coconut version.
