Over the years, many cities worldwide experienced various changes meant to increase the safety of citizens. The measures include installing surveillance cameras on the streets, in public markets, in buildings and public transport. Moreover, private agencies also installed monitoring instruments.

1. London, UK
The British capital has around 51,000 surveillance cameras installed, according to Big Brother Watch (BBW). On average, a British citizen is filmed 300 times per day. BBW also claims that 20% of global surveillance cameras are installed in Great Britain.
2. Beijing, China
Every corner of the city is permanently monitored by the police. The local surveillance system is part of the national Chinese surveillance system called Skynet and launched in 2005. In 2015, 46,000 police cameras were installed in Beijing, and over 43,000 policemen were handling the surveillance.
3. Chicago, USA
Thousands of surveillance cameras are installed on buildings, on street poles, buses and even train tunnels. It is estimated that around 10,000 such devices are installed throughout the city.
4. New York, USA
The city has one of the most sophisticated surveillance systems in the USA, developed especially after the 9/11 attacks. The number of surveillance cameras is currently around 6,000.
5. Chongqing, China
In 2012, local authorities announced they wanted to implement a project of 500,000 surveillance cameras. The idea hasn’t been completely implemented yet.
