Brexit campaign largely funded by five businessmen
While the British government is still preparing for the negotiations with the European authorities after triggering Article 50, a new study revealed that the campaign to leave the EU was funded largely by five businessmen, according to a The Evening Standard report.
A study of finances by The Sunday Times Rich List found that business leaders accounted for 71 per cent of finances for both sides of the Brexit battle.
The five businessmen gave almost £15m to Brexiteers, with a total of £24.1m in donations and loans given to leave campaign groups in the five months leading to the referendum.
According to the study, Crystal Place co-owner Jeremy Hosking paid £1.69m to leave campaigners.
The campaign’s biggest donor was Aaron Banks who gave £8.1m to Brexit campaigners. The other three donors are investment billionaire Peter Hargreves, motor entrepreneur Lord Edmiston and hedge fund manager Crispin Odey.
On the other hand, Lord Salisbury of Turville gave £ 4.2 m to pro-EU groups.
An investigation lead bu the Electoral Commission has been started over potentially impermissible donations in the Leave EU campaign.
