Harry Potter is coming to Broadway
The highly anticipated stage production: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is finally coming to the United States to Broadway. Here’s what we know so far.
It’s finally happened. Harry Potter is officially coming to Broadway. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child received nothing but rave reviews when it premiered in London’s West End in 2016. It’s no secret that Potter fans everywhere had been waiting for years for the return of a Harry Potter book since 2007 when the last book of the original series was released. It seems only natural that the next stop for the highly anticipated theatre production would be New York. Although, it was surprising because J.K. Rowling has, in the past, been tentative with bringing her precious world to the states, preferring to keep it connected to Europe where it takes place. It seems the world of Fantastic Beasts opened her mind to the idea, and there’s no doubt that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be as well received as any of Rowling’s other ventures. The play follows Harry as a grown adult with three children and a wife, Ginny Weasley, as he maneuvers a life of normalcy. As an overworked Ministry of Magic employee, Harry tries to figure out what a normal life looks like nearly two decades after the infamous battle that ended evil and saved an entire society of witches and wizards. In parallel, it follows Harry’s son who, at Hogwarts, struggles with the weight of his father’s legacy.
The play is set to open on Broadway in New York’s Lyric Theatre in the spring of 2018. The cast will include seven of the original cast members from the West End Company to reprise their roles as Harry, Hermione, Ron, and their friends. Hopefully, the Cursed Child store will follow to New York with exclusive merchandise for the play, though this is not yet confirmed. Fans of the Potter series love to get their hands on any merchandise that can bring them one step closer to immersing themselves even further into the wizarding world.
The production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set in two parts which you can buy tickets for either in a set of two, Part One on one day and Part Two on another, or just one part if you can stand the suspense of not seeing the end (let’s be real, no one does that). For the first time, the New York production will take part in the Ticketmaster Verified Fan program which allows purchasers to go through a registration process that will give them a redemption code that they will use to buy their tickets at a later date. This process was created to protect people from scalped tickets and paying more than they should. The process is still only available for limited events throughout the US and Canada. For Cursed Child, the registration process will begin the first week of October 2017 and tickets will officially be on sale October 12th, 2017. While the play won’t premiere until April of 2018, previews will begin in March of the same year.
