Zuckerberg Cautions Against Screenshots in Facebook Messenger

Mark Zuckerberg has issued a reminder and potential warning to Facebook Messenger users about screenshot notifications. The Meta CEO announced on Friday that an update to Messenger will alert users when someone captures an image of their encrypted chat.

“New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message,” Zuckerberg wrote, accompanying his post with a screenshot of a conversation with his wife, Priscilla Chan. He also noted additional features: “We’re also adding GIFs, stickers, and reactions to encrypted chats.”

The announcement follows a recent platform update allowing users to set messages to self-destruct. Currently rolled out in the United States, the feature is expected to expand to European users in the coming weeks.

Rival messaging platforms like Snapchat already offer similar privacy features, including message disappearance and screenshot notifications. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp have long incorporated end-to-end encryption, a feature Meta has recently integrated.

Industry observers suggest the move addresses growing concerns about online security and digital communication privacy. User responses ranged from curiosity to skepticism, with one asking about a long-requested “dislike button” and another questioning the platform’s broader societal impact.

The updates will extend to Instagram, another Meta-owned platform, signaling a comprehensive approach to messaging privacy.
