During a recent interview with journalist Sharyl Attkisson on “Full Measure,” President Donald Trump praised Jeff Bezos’ leadership of the Washington Post. “I’ve gotten to know him, and I think he’s trying to do a real job,” Trump stated, suggesting the newspaper’s management has improved.

Bezos’ strategic changes, including canceling the planned endorsement of Kamala Harris for the 2024 election, have drawn significant criticism. Opinion columnist Ruth Marcus announced her departure after 40 years, citing Bezos’ restructuring of the opinion section.

In late February, Bezos declared that the opinion page would focus on “writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets.” This announcement coincided with editorial page editor David Shipley’s resignation.

“I am of America and for America,” Bezos stated. “Our country’s success has been rooted in economic and personal freedoms that drive creativity and prosperity.”

Liberal media commentators condemned the move as “a terrible tragedy.” Marcus elaborated on her exit in a New Yorker piece, revealing that her critical column about the changes was killed by publisher Will Lewis.

“I stayed until the newspaper’s owner issued an edict that opinion offerings would concentrate on ‘personal liberties and free markets,’ with opposing viewpoints to be published elsewhere,” Marcus wrote.

This isn’t the first controversial decision by Bezos. Last year, he withdrew the Post’s Harris endorsement just before the election, resulting in significant subscriber and staff losses.

Trump also reflected on media dynamics, claiming that during his first term, tech platforms like Google and Facebook were predominantly opposed to him.

The restructuring highlights ongoing tensions between traditional journalism and new editorial visions, raising questions about media independence and ideological diversity.
