Unlike traditional dairy alternatives, this unconventional milk source comes from the Diploptera punctata, a unique cockroach species that gives birth to live offspring. The mother secretes a pale yellow liquid within her brood sac, which crystallizes into nutrient-dense milk crystals that nourish her young.

A 2016 study published in the Journal of the International Union of Crystallography, led by biochemist Subramanian Ramaswamy, exposed the extraordinary nutritional profile of these milk crystals. The research revealed that cockroach milk contains three times the calories of buffalo milk, alongside a robust combination of proteins, amino acids, fats, and sugars.

The potential of this unexpected superfood extends beyond its nutritional density. Insect-based food production offers a significantly smaller environmental footprint compared to traditional dairy farming, making it an intriguing option for sustainable food innovation.

However, significant challenges remain. Extracting milk from individual cockroaches is impractical, and the safety of human consumption has not been conclusively established. While one researcher reportedly found the milk flavorless, scientific validation is still pending.
