A devastating helicopter crash into the Hudson River killed six people, including three children, on Thursday, authorities reported. The victims were a family of five from Spain and the pilot.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed condolences, stating, “Our hearts go out to the families.” The deceased were identified as Agustn Escobar and his wife Merc Camprub Montal, both Siemens executives, and their children aged four, five, and eleven.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch initially withheld victim identities pending family notifications. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Snchez described the incident as devastating, while regional leader Salvador Illa extended sympathy to the victims’ Barcelona-based family.

Video footage captured the helicopter falling inverted into the river after reportedly losing control near the George Washington Bridge. Operated by New York Helicopters, the flight departed from Downtown Skyport at 14:59 local time.

Rescue efforts commenced immediately after the first emergency calls at 15:17 EDT. Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker noted that swimmers entered the water promptly. Despite swift response, rescuers could not save the passengers. Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, with two others dying at a nearby hospital.

The crash occurred near Manhattan’s west side, close to New York University’s main campus. The Federal Aviation Administration announced that the National Transportation Safety Board would investigate the Bell 206 helicopter incident.

This tragedy follows previous New York aerial accidents, including a 2018 East River crash that killed five tourists and a 2009 mid-air collision over the Hudson River that claimed nine lives.

Michael Roth, CEO of New York Helicopter Charter Inc, expressed devastation, while witnesses described hearing loud sounds and seeing debris scatter.

President Joe Biden extended condolences, emphasizing the profound loss experienced by the victims’ families.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the crash’s specific circumstances.
