Samsung’s co-CEO Han Jong-hee passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at age 63. Han became the electronic giant’s chief executive officer in 2022, previously serving as vice chairman and leading the Device Experience division overseeing TV, home appliances, and smartphones.
With nearly four decades at the company, Han began in Samsung’s displays division and progressively advanced through the corporate ranks to become co-CEO alongside Jun Young-hyun.

Han passed away from a cardiac arrest, leaving behind his wife and three children. Samsung has not yet announced a successor, with Jun remaining in sole charge following their recent co-CEO appointment at the annual shareholders meeting.

Many industry experts credit Han with transforming Samsung into a global technology powerhouse, strategically positioning the company against key rivals. Currently the 41st most valuable public company, Samsung’s market capitalization stands at $261.52 billiona significant drop from its $553 billion peak in January 2021.
This decline stems from underperforming semiconductor and technology segments, causing Samsung to lose ground in competitive markets. The company has also surrendered smartphone market dominance, though remaining among the top three manufacturers.
Following Han’s death, company shares initially declined 0.5% but quickly rebounded, with market analysts suggesting the movement aligned with broader South Korean market trends.

CLSA Securities Korea analyst Sanjeev Rana emphasized Han’s substantial industry impact, stating, “His contribution to the consumer electronics business cannot be overstated. Under his leadership, Samsung’s TV business maintained a very strong market position over the last two decades.”
Han was instrumental in Samsung’s comprehensive electronics manufacturing, uniquely producing products across communication, entertainment, and home appliance sectors.
