Trump Bans Transgenders from Military
How far back in time does that put the LGBTQ community?
In a tweet on July 26, 1017, President Trump said that he would ban Transgenders from the military. His tweet has since sparked outrage from around the world and especially from the LGBTQ community but just what does this latest outrage from the President mean for the future and for the people his latest ruling affects, how far does this push them back?
An estimated 6,600 transgender troops are in active duty in the military according to the Rand Corp. 4,100 more are reported to be in the reserves. Trump based his decision in July on the “tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail”. But, kicking these transgender troops out of the military would force the military to not just lose able-bodied soldiers but also all the investments they put into them such as recruitment and training.
“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory…cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail”
Trumps tweets sparked outrage from the trans community and they did not get any better as he continued when he was interviewed a few days after his harsh tweets.
“Look, I have great support—or I’ve had great support for that community. I got a lot of votes. But the transgender-the military is working on it now…I think I’m doing a lot of people a favor by coming out and just saying it…”
Many would agree to disagree with the President and while his transgender ban has seemed to take a back seat when compared to the other issues circling around the President these days, many are bracing themselves for when it returns.
