Texas Governor approves ban on sanctuary cities

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a ban on “sanctuary cities” Sunday night.

Despite major opposition from every major police chief in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott signed a ban on “sanctuary cities”. To clarify, Texas does not currently have any cities which have declared themselves sanctuaries for immigrants.

According to Associated Press, the ban lets police ask during routine stops whether someone is in the U.S legally and threatens sheriffs with jail if they don’t cooperate with federal immigration agents. The new bill also requires police chiefs and sheriffs – under the threat of jail or removal of office – to comply with federal requests to hold criminal suspects for possible deportation.

Terri Burke, executive director of the ACLU of Texas, said “we will fight this assault in the courts.” Considering that this law will not go into effect until September 1st, there’s a possibility that it can be struck down in court before ever being implemented.
