Wikipedia founder launches new online service to fight fake news – VIDEO
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales will launch a new online service supported by donations with the purpose of fighting fake news.
The service will be called ”Wikitribune” and will bring together experienced journalists and volunteers that will produce ”well-checked news of global interest”.
The new website will be free to access and will accept monthly donations from those supporting the initiative, like Wikipedia. The world’s largest virtual library does not display ads and self-supports solely from donations made by readers and companies.
“This is a problem because ads are cheap, competition for clicks is fierce and low-quality news sources are everywhere,” Wales said.
Google and Facebook have been harshly criticised, for example, regarding fake news.
The problem is increasingly pressing now that people are getting more and more information from social networks and not from traditional sources.
