Ikea teams up with NASA in order to make ”space furniture”

Ikea teamed up with NASA in order to make furniture that will be used in space, DigitalTrends reports. More specifically, the two closed a collaboration in which a team from Ikea will spend three days at the MDRS Habitat centre in Utah, since it is “a confined spacecraft-like environment that simulates the experience of outer space.”

This is not a joke, since actual NASA astronauts spend up to three years in that habitat in order to get ready for their trip into space.

“It’s a crazy, fun experience,” said Ikea Creative Leader, Michael Nikolic.”We’re basically completely isolated for three days to get a taste of what astronauts go through for three years. It’s almost like that misery you feel when you’re out camping.”

Ikea will use the collected data ”to see how best to create a Mars-ready home ”.

More exactly, should humankind ever leave the Earth, we will be capable of producing cheap furniture on other planets as well. SpaceX, the space company owned by billionaire Elon Musk, announced the launch of a human mission to Mars in 2025.

Until then, though, Ikea states that the knowledge accumulated for urban development in great urban environments might be used, where the available space is extremely limited, and pollution is almost a norm.

“I think that the essence of this collection will be about appreciating what we have on Earth: human beings, plants, clean water, and air. But also diversity and a sense of belonging — things that we take for granted on a daily basis,” Nikolic added. “After this journey, it’ll probably feel pretty awesome to come home to my own bed.”
