The secret of the crystal skull

In 1927, Albert Mitchell-Hedges, the archaeologist, uncovered a crystal skull while on expedition in British Honduras (present-day Belize). The skull is one of the most well-known mysteries from the history of mankind, which baffles science to this day.

What is the story behind the skull?

The archaeologist and his expedition members were looking for traces of an unexplored Mayan town, which had been completely overgrown with lush vegetation in the wilderness. To help in their search, they decided to ignite the primeval forest, as it was impossible to uncover the site by conventional means. A huge tree-covered area was lost in the flames, but the expedition members were confronted by an amazing discovery after the smoke had disappeared.

They spotted a large, unparalleled and outstandingly preserved settlement, which comprised many pyramids and other constructions. The Mitchell-Hedges expedition found something especially unique, which sharply divided archaeologists during the excavations. Some of them believed their strange discovery to be a fake, while others considered it to be one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century.

How was it made?

The strange item in question was a human skull, made of a quartz crystal; whose proportions were perfect and machining quality unprecedented. It function remains unknown, while its origin is lost in obscurity. Nobody knows how the crystal skull was made, but such precision machining of quartz crystal requires a technology that is currently unavailable to mankind. Prior to the Mitchell-Hedges discovery, some similar items found, but each of them was quite different. This crystal skull is anatomically perfect in relation to the human skull.

In the 1970s, Hewlett-Packard’s laboratory undertook a detailed study of this special find. It transpired that the crystal skull was made of a single large quartz crystal, but the makers had not used any kind of metal tool, as scratches were detected on the skull’s surface during the microscopic examination.

As a consequence, Mitchell-Hedges’ crystal skull remains an archaeological and technological paradox: in other words, a nightmare for archaeologists – a seemingly unsolvable mystery. Mitchell-Hedges took possession of the skull until the 1930s when it was transferred to a museum in Brazil. By that time, many legends grew up around the archaeologist’s discovery.

Theories about the skull

It has been observed, among other things, that the crystal skull changes colour from time to time; when it is obscured, regardless of the weather conditions, it sometimes fades and sometimes glows bright. Some believe that the skull is that of a goddess, while others regard the piece as a bequest from alien creatures or proof of a prehistoric, highly advanced civilization. It is also worth noting that Mitchell-Hedges’ crystal skull was of considerable interested to occult experts during the Third Reich. Karl Maria Wiligut, the black magician and mysterious Nazi witch, believed that the find was the skull of the Goddess of Death, an ancient Aryan sacred relic that had originated from the lost city of Atlantis.

The strange find and the Nazis

In 1943, the SS Ancestral Administration Office deployed special agents to Brazil to kidnap and transport the crystal skull to Germany. The Nazi agents broke into the museum, smashed the glass of the display case and tried to remove the skull. However, they were unable to leave the building because the museum’s security staff caught them in time. During their interrogation, the thieves admitted that the crime had been committed on behalf of the Nazi state. Although the first attempt to steal the mysterious crystal skull failed, leaders of the Third Reich did not abandon the idea and recruited new agents for this purpose. But this second group also failed. Subsequently, the museum’s board of directors removed the item from display and stored in a safer place.

Occultism and the SS

Leaders of the Ahnenerbe, the Nazi’s occult organization, were convinced that the crystal skull was an energy source, with highly important magical properties, which had been produced by Aryan mankind and possessed the power of an earthquake. As it happened, the main symbol used by the SS was also designed by Wiligut, at the request of Heinrich Himmler. In Wiligut’s estimation, it should have been possible to create the Herrenvolk (master race) with help from Mitchell-Hedges’ crystal skull because its magical properties were powerful enough to take the evolution of the human race to the ultimate level. In other words, according to Wiligut, the crystal skull would liberate pagan energies, enabling the Nazi ‘wizards’ to establish dominion over the world. It is clear, then, why the SS cared so much about the crystal skull, as well as the Spear of Longinus and the Holy Grail: these relics, they were convinced, would grant  them the occult power needed to create the Thousand-year Reich and cultivate the Nazi Übermenschen, the superhuman beings.
