Internet of Things: Smarter Machines, Smarter Cities

Internet of Things sounds like magic. Are you aware of the what it is and what it can do? Let’s know better the technology of tomorrow.

Have you seen a scientific revolution? We saw a lot of them but yet seems too little. Maybe we are yet to see some even greater brilliance of science. Geniuses are working their days off to revolutionize the field they belong to. The course of IoT is not an exception. Internet of Things is growing at an unmatchable pace. In fact, it is the biggest thing we can look forward to right now.

What is IoT?

What’s this technology, any idea? IoT is going to install brains into our things. The concept is to install built-in sensors to our everyday life things from the machines we use to the things we wear. These built-in sensors gather some vital data based on conditions of the objects they are linked to and act as required over a network to make those objects the ‘thinking smart objects.’

Evolution of IoT

It’s already been a decade since IoT-based gadgets and machines made an appearance. Initially, there wasn’t any recognition of what potential it carries. With the wireless internet becoming more popular and highly active sensors arriving in a surge form, the technology grew big time.

Kevin Ashton who is one of the founders of Auto-ID center at the MIT along with his team discovered the way of connecting any object to the internet through RFID tags in the late 90s. He called it ‘Internet of Things.’

Why we need it?

The need of the time is the intelligence of devices. We want our things to know everything about every issue and act on their own to sort them out. A technology that makes these devices and objects communicate through wireless internet and process the obtained data. If it happens, the devices can also take fitting action on their own. No supervision required.

IoT, when connected to vehicles and traffic devices can smoothen and organize the traffic flow. Moreover, vehicles will be informed and ready for odd situations. IoT in marketing would bless us with the behavioral information people. We would know who to target in our campaigns. Also collecting data right from people’s devices, we can send them very relevant offers. IoT-based smart wearables give us all the facts and figures of our body. We thus can be more aware of our health conditions.

IoT is going to impact every field of human existence in a way that’s dreamy. We can truly accept the current time as the new generation of smart devices and smart cities.

The current stance and growth of IoT

IoT appears to advance very rapidly. Within no time it’s going to be an integral part of humans’ lives. This year it is expected to connect 4.9 billion objects, and by the end of 2020 can even exceed the 50 billion mark. The market of smart wearables devices has grown by more than 200%, and smart clothing is knocking our doors. Google and Samsung are already down for this change. IoT is expected to add about 10 to 15 trillion dollars to the global GDP.

Future scopes of the technology

The connectivity and importance of IoT are only going to inflate in the years to come. Currently, less than 1% of the devices that can be a part of this technology are connected, and this number is bound to rise. With the aim of connecting more and more devices, IoT has the potential to multiply the revenue being created in the world. With every milestone crossed, it’s going to show us the new face of the internet where our cities and devices will be smarter than ever.
