New York City is a large metropolis, so it is only natural that it has a matching transportation system. The New York subway is both the world’s longest rapid transit system and the largest in terms of the number of stations. Serving all five boroughs of the city, the subway is used by an average of 5,65 million riders everyday.

Things can get pretty busy, though. Here are the busiest subway stations in New York City, based on ridership.

The busiest subway station in the whole city, Times Square at 42nd street is the busiest station in the New York City Subway system, with a ridership of 66,4 million in 2015. Its location in midtown Manhattan is the most prime real estate in the city.

Grand Central – 42nd Street

This station has a ridership 46.7 million passengers in 2015, and its spectacular architecture is a popular touristic spot. It also holds the record for most platforms – 44.

34th Street – Herald Square

This station comes third as the most crowded one in New York City, with a ridership of 39,5 million. There are numerous attractions nearby, such as the Empire State building, Manhattan Mall, Herald Square and Madison Square Garden.

These three subway station are followed by 14th Street – Union Square, with 35.3 million riders in 2015, 34th Street – Penn Station, with 28.3 million riders, 59th Street – Columbus Circle – 23.2 million riders, Fulton Street – 21.7 million riders, Lexington Avenue – 59th Street, with 21.4 million riders and 86th Street, which had 20,8 million riders in 2015.
