Muscle building “exercise pill”could soon be available

If you do not like going to the gym but dream about having muscles, an “exercise pill” could be the solution you are looking for. Researchers say the muscle-building pill has come one step closer with the publication of a new study, report The Independent

Scientists found that obese people produce more of a protein called myostatin, which makes it difficult for them to build muscle. By suppressing the production of the protein one could increase muscle mass and also improve health and kidney health.

Although the research was conducted in mice, the team hopes that further down the road it will lead to human treatments.

Lead researcher Joshua Butcher, from Augusta University in the US state of Georgia, said: “Ultimately, the goal of our research would be to create a pill that mimics the effect of exercise and protects against obesity.

“A pill that inhibits myostatin could also have applications for muscle-wasting diseases, such as cancer, muscle dystrophy and Aids.”

After the experiment the researchers found that mice with no myostatin became more muscular.

The scientists say more research is needed but this is a promising way to develop drugs to offer protection against obesity derived health issues.

The research was presented at the American Physiological Society’s annual meeting, Experimental Biology 2017, in Chicago.
