Russia begin Confederations Cup campaign with a win

The FIFA Confederations Cup 2017, kicked off yesterday with the host nation Russia beating New Zealand in a comfortable 2-0 victory. Russia opened the scoring, half an hour into the first half, when the hapless Michael Boxhall put to ball in his own net after trying to clear it off the line, whilst seeing that Denis Glushakov was about to pounce on goal.

However this did not change the fact that Russia were always very much in control of the match (despite getting somewhat lucky with their first goal), when the hosts doubled their lead twenty four minutes into the second half after some good passing build up play on the break on the right wing and where the Russian Forward Fedor Smolov easily slotted the ball in the back of the net.

With the match won comfortably in the end, this result (for now at least) puts Russia at the top of Group A, which as well as New Zealand also includes Mexico and Portugal.
