The surprising benefits of a fish rich diet

Scientists promote a rich fish diet in order to relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. According to a new study, people that eat fish more than twice a week complained less of tender and swollen joints.

Nutritionists say that we should consume fish at least twice a week and a new study published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research agrees as it found that an increased consumption of fish can help manage better rheumatoid arthritis.

According to the findings, individuals suffering from this condition, who consumed fish at least 2 times a week, had lower disease activity, swollen or tender joint, than those who never ate fish or ate fish once a month.

176 patients participated in the study and the doctors monitored their health and frequency of fish consumption.

“If our finding holds up in other studies, it suggests that fish consumption may lower inflammation related to rheumatoid arthritis disease activity,” said Dr. Sara Tedeschi, lead author of the study in a press release. “Fish consumption has been noted to have many beneficial health effects, and our findings may give patients with rheumatoid arthritis a strong reason to increase fish consumption.”

And patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis are not the only ones that can benefit form the increased consumption of fish.

Other studies have linked fish consumption with a decreased risk of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease, it can even fend off depression and diabetes.

Many of the benefits of fish consumption are linked to the fatty acids contained by fish and other seafood products. Especially omega 3 fatty acids are extremely important when it comes to a healthy diet.  This is why fish oil supplements have become so popular as a way of increasing intake of omega 3 fatty acids.
