Cundeamor, the magical medicinal fruit

In the forests of the Dominican Republic grows a strange looking orange fruit. Serpents have been known to eat the red seeds that lie inside. This magical fruit is called Cundeamor and it has the potential to aid with your diabetes.

Villa Vazquez is a developing village in the Dominican Republic near the Haitian Border. It was during my time in this village that I saw a bright orange fruit hanging from the branch of a tree. With deep wonderment, I left my car and walked to pick the fruit and take it home with me. As soon as I got home I began looking into what uses the fruit had.

I discovered the fruit was called cundeamor or bitter melon. My host informed me that many people used it against skin rashes back in the day. But this wasn’t the end of the story. Throughout my intense research I discovered that this fruit not only had amazing medicinal uses, but that those who practiced Santeria used it as an offering for some of their Orishas. An orisha is a spirit that reflects one of the manifestations of God in the Yoruba Religion. It grows in tropical and warm areas like Africa, the Caribbean, South America, parts of Asia and the Amazon. The fruit is bitter in taste, with a slimy texture on the inside. When ripe, the fruit takes on a bright and orange color that makes it look like a gem, and on the inside the seeds take a perfectly round shape with bright red nectar.

The external use of the boiled seeds of the fruit serves to relieve any skin problems, burns and rashes. The dry leaves of the plant can be toasted and ground to apply as a salve to the burns. To treat diabetes it is recommended to prepare a tea with an equal amount of cundeamor leaves and avocado leaves. Then proceed to drink the tea as water for two or three consecutive days. You can also just eat the small fruit once a day or drink two ounces of the extract daily. For any other treatments, it is recommended to boil 30 grams of leaves for each liter of water and not drink more than three cups a day. More research is being done on this fruit everyday to find potential miracle cures for hopeless patients.

Next time you visit a Caribbean or tropical country, make sure to seek out this wonderful fruit and take some home with you! But don’t worry, you can also order cundeamor pills from the comfort of your own home at amazon.com.
