Five ways in which you can protect yourself from skin cancer

Skin cancer can be easily prevented and successfully treated, if caught early. According to Miami Herald, these are some tips that you should follow if you want to protect yourself against skin cancer.

1. Wear the right sunscreen

Studies have shown that SPFs above 50 do not offer significantly more UV protection than their lower complements. However, what is important is that you should reapply sunscreen after water immersion every 30 minutes, especially when sweating. The quantity is also important: use a shot glass of sunscreen to cover the exposed areas of skin and one-half of a teaspoon on the face.

2. Steer clear of tanning beds

Indoor tanning beds are not safer than spending time under the sun. They are actually more harmful, as they only use UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays. The fact that your skin doesn’t get sunburn hides the actual damage. When given the choice, always choose natural sunlight.

3. Keep track of your moles

The American Academy of Dermatology recomments performing regular self-exams and record the information on a “mole map”. This is a large part of skin cancer prevention. Early detection involves this practice, as it will help you find abnormal changes, if any.

4. Remember the ABCDEs of melanoma

When keeping track of your moles, remember to look for these:

▪ A: Asymmetry
▪ B: Irregular borders
▪ C: Uneven color
▪ D: Diameter larger than the size of a pencil eraser
▪ E: Evolution, or change, in any of the above characteristics
