Dangerous amounts of lead found in fidget spinners

Fidget spinners are definitely having a moment, but an environmental activist recently discovered dangerous amounts of lead in these popular toys.

Tamara Rubin, an environmental activist, has recently tested several fidget spinners for lead and mercury and discovered that one of them had very high levels of not only lead, but mercury as well. After disassembling the toy with LED lights, she found 19,000 parts per million (ppm) of lead and 1,000 ppm of mercury. Moreover, the paint on the LED light spinner contained 334 ppm of lead and 155 ppm of mercury in one test while the unpainted metal base contained 1,562 ppm of mercury and 2,452 ppm of lead

The numbers are rather concerning, as scientists consider under 90 ppm of lead to be the safe limit in children’s toys.

As a result, Rubin now recommends people to avoid purchasing fidget spinners and instead make their own ones, for example out of LEGOs.
