Picking your nose and eating your bogies is actually healthy

Nose-picking is a well-known habit, that is particularly seen in children. It is a habit that is either forgotten by adulthood, or practised in private. A study says that it is, in fact, healthy to eat our bogies and children should be encouraged to do so.

The reason why is that bogies might actually have a lot of health benefits that could be specifically good for growing children. The study discovered that they contain salivary mucins, which form a barrier against cavity-causing bacteria, according to Kidspot.

Researchers are trying to develop a way to create synthetic mucus that could be made into chewing gum or toothpaste to provide these benefits, as the Independent reports.

Further more, there’s proof that mucus in snot might be able to defend against respiratory infections, stomach ulcers and HIV.

Austrian lung specialist Prof. Friedrich Bischinger believes people who pick their noses are healthy, happier and probably better in tune with their bodies than others.

“And eating the dry remains of what you pull out is a great way of strengthening the body’s immune system. Medically it makes great sense and is a perfectly natural thing to do,” he said.

“In terms of the immune system, the nose is a filter in which a great deal of bacteria are collected, and when this mixture arrives in the intestines it works just like a medicine.”

Bischinger thinks that the social stigma surrounding nose-picking should be forgotten. However, previous reports and advice from doctors and specialists stated that picking your nose might lead to bleeding, making it easier for germs to come in.
