Top most expensive cities for expats. Where does London stand?

Luanda, the capital of Angola, is the most expensive city for expats, according to the most recent report published by Mercer. London came out 30th in the ranking.

After Luanda, the podium is occupied by Hong Kong and Tokyo. The following positions, up to the 10th, are: Zurich, Singapore, Seoul, Geneva, Shanghai, New York City and Bern.

At the opposite end, the least expensive cities for expats are Minsk, Karachi, Sarajevo, Monterrey, Tbilisi, Blantyre, Windhoek, Skopje, Bishkek and Tunis. London comes 30th in the ranking.

Regarding the regional ranking, the most expensive five cities in Central and Eastern Europe are Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Riga, Prague and Istanbul.

In western Europe, the most expensive cities for expats are Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Copenhagen and London.

In Asia, the ranking comes as following: Hong Kong (1), Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul, Shanghai (5).

The most expensive five cities in the Middle East and Africa are Luanda, Victoria, N’Djamena, Tel Aviv and Kinshasa, while the most expensive cities in North America are New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Honolulu.

In Central and Southern America, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo and Santiago are the most expensive, while in the Pacific area, the most expensive five cities are Sydney, Noumea, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland.

In order to file this report, Mercer took into consideration the costs of various goods and services, such as rents, transport, food and clothing.

On the other hand, a report published by HSBC in early 2017 showed that expats working in Switzerland are the most well-paid in the world, earning an average of $188,275 per year. The country is followed by Germany and Sweden.
