Doughnut or Donut?? It’s National Donut Day!

Yes, it’s true! There is a whole dedicated to the most magical of nuts- the Doughnut! But really, is it donut or doughnut? And why do we celebrate it at all?

The correct spelling is technically doughnut- but the shortened form of the word has been around for some time. almost as long as the delectable doughnut itself. The Doughnut (and it’s correct spelling) find their origins in the mid 1800’s. While the shortened form of the word was originally used by advertisers to make pronunciation of the word doughnut easier in the early 1900’s.

History tells us that the doughnut hole came before the doughnut itself, and the doughnut as we know it today was an invention of necessity to create a doughnut that was not soggy and cooked through. And history also tells us that the Doughnut is a thoroughly American treat, most likely created on good old American soil.

So, why celebrate a day dedicated to Doughnuts, even if they are the most delicious and amazing treats ever?

Well, here’s a little bit more history for you- During World War I, 250 members of the Salvation Army went to France to serve doughnuts to soldiers on the front lines, eventually becoming known as the Doughnut Dollies. In honor of those courageous people, we get #NationalDoughnutDay! Now, go honor their brave work by enjoying a delicious doughnut. Or donut. To heck with it, have one of each.
