Opinion: 3 tips for surviving retail as an adult

If you’ve ever worked retail, you know it can be tough. It gets harder as we’re older. Eventually it’s not a side gig anymore, but your actual job!! Here are three ways you can overcome any hurdle that comes your way.

1.    Be prior service Military.

Whether you’ve been in the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Navy: military experience will help you get through those long days in retail. At some point, every serviceman and woman has heard the word ‘detail’, “I need 5 soldiers for a detail” and before you know it, you are 4 hours into separating inventory. This can make or break some folks, but for some, it helps build a special tolerance for nonsense that comes out of left field. You’ll come across that quite often throughout the world of retail. Every guest is a potential sour patch so that tolerance will come in handy.

2.    Take an acting class.

There are fundamentals of acting that will help you “show face” throughout your workday. Some of you will make your way up the retail ladder into management and some of you will stay behind. Whatever your ambitions are, it will pay to bring out the Meryl Streep in you, “I don’t see you any different than I do everyone else”. When in reality, that subordinate couldn’t be more trash and you actually literally feel they are beneath you. However, it’s usually the everyday customers that you need to prepare for. Some customers will tell you how they just had heart surgery, but you could care less. With the right acting skills, you will get the feels.

3.    Ladies, Menage a Moi. Gentlemen, ‘Hairy palms’!

Look ladies and gentlemen. The next person will swear they talked to corporate. They are also going to refer to you by the name of the company YOU “represent”. Before you get into all of that, make some time in the morning or night for some solo sexy time to yourself. If you have your significant other, try to have some ‘sexy time’. Now you will have the capacity to tackle anything that comes your way.

If you haven’t followed any of these tips and you are still in it to win it? You are one tough cookie or you died inside years ago. Enjoy!
