A suspected burglar ended up in the hospital over the weekend after police say he was badly beaten when he tried to break into a Tennessee woman’s home.

Lisa Morelock opened her door in Kingsport this weekend after hearing a knock on Saturday night after a woman who appeared said she was handing out flyers searching for a lost dog, WJHL reported.

However, when she pulled the door back she was grabbed by the arm by a man, later identified as Joe M. Sotello, wearing a mask who jumped out and tried to drag her outside, police say. The 52-year-old woman began fighting off the attacker, a man more than twice her size as she is only four feet 11 inches tall.

‘He said ‘this is a robbery’,’ Lisa told WCYB. ‘It was like we were playing football and I was the smallest quarterback in the world.’
Police say he continuously tried to force his way inside the house.

Lisa said she saw that he had a gun and went to grab a baseball bat that she keeps near the front door to try and defend herself. ‘I guess that was a shock to his system,’ Lisa said.

Lisa’s 18-year-old daughter and a friend were also inside the residence and immediately jumped in to help fight off the suspected burglar.

‘I guess I’m proud of us because we defended ourselves,’ her daughter, Morgan Morelock, stated. ‘I just hate that it had to happen.’ During the fight, Lisa was able to pull back his mask and said it was someone she knew.

‘I was shocked,’ Lisa shared. ‘I’ve known him close to 15 years, it’s not like it’s just stranger danger.’ After the incident, she said she feels that any woman who may be a victim has the right to defend themselves. ‘Just be strong, I know it’s scary,’ the brave woman said. ‘Try to get over your fear and react.’ Police say Sotello, fled to a house down the street and the residents inside that home were ironically relatives of the victims and held him until authorities arrived.

The 34-year-old man has been charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. His girlfriend has not been charged as of Monday and claimed to police that she cooperated with his alleged plan out of fear. KPD Public Information Officer Thomas M. Patton told Kingsport Times News that Sotello later confessed and said “had been going through some hard times.” He is being held in Sullivan County Jail in Blountville pending arraignment, in lieu of a $35,000 bond as specified by the presiding magistrate.
