Shepherds find “unicorn” in Iceland

Named Einhyrningur – Icelandic for “Unicorn” – the one-year-old ram is a local attraction in Iceland, after it was discovered that he only has one horn sprouting from the middle of his forehead. Usually, Icelandic rams have two horns, and both Einhyrningur’s parents had two of them.

Farmers found the ram, his mother and some other sheep around Christms, after being left behind when the sheep were rounded up in autumn. The shepherds initially mistook Einhyrningur for a goat, as the ram’s owner, Erla Þórey Ólafsdóttir told the Icelandic Monitor.

“Both horns grow together like one, and split at the end. This seems special, and he has a peculiar look because of this. The horns stretch his face, particularly around the eyes so he always seems to be a bit surprised. He kind of looks like people that have had a facelift,” Ólafsdóttir said laughing.

According to the source, most Icelandic sheep have two horns, both male and female. There are even some that have four.
