Donald Sutherland’s career

Learn about one of the greatest living legends in the entertainment world.

Born on July 17, 1935, Donald Sutherland has had a remarkable career. He began with small parts in films like Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965). It wasn’t until the ’70s that Sutherland’s career began to take off. He co-starred with Jane Fonda in Klute (1971), which earned Fonda her first Oscar. Sutherland might not have been as famous as Fonda at that time, but he still managed to continue working for the next few decades.

As Sutherland matured, he began taking on roles that consist of being a “father figure” to a particular film’s main character. One example is when he played the father to Nicole Kidman’s character in Cold Mountain (2003). Another example, which also ended up being one of Sutherland’s most memorable recent roles, was for playing Mr. Bennet in Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice, the fictional father of the five Bennet sisters from Jane Austen’s timeless classic.

Throughout his career, Sutherland has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Marlon Brando and Robert Redford. In spite of his somewhat rough start in Hollywood, Sutherland really has left a mark in the entertainment world.
