What to say when the question “tell me about yourself” pops up in an interview
When it comes to answering this, Harvard junior Jessica Pointing has some tips. “You should already know the answer off the top of your head,” she told Business Insider. “It’s your elevator pitch. In addition to that, it’s probably going to be the first question asked in the interview. First impressions matter.”
Pointing said that, in order to craft the perfect response, you have to:
- Start off with a brief introduction that includes your name, your school and what you’re studying (if you’re a student)
- Continue with the highlights of your résumé, without overdoing it
- Talk a bit about why you want to work for the company and specify the position you’re applying for
Following this plan will remind the interviewer you’re a good candidate for the job, which is, eventually, your goal.
