Opinion: The looming snap election that wasn’t meant to be but is

‘Hold your horse!’ Said the unsuspecting British electorate with a look of rye disgruntlement. ‘Another election??’. Yes on the 8th of June Britain will descend onto the ballot box again. Since 2014 Britain has engaged in the strange rigmarole of election frenzy that appears to be focused on one sole goal – obfuscation!

Theresa May has done the unthinkable and called a snap election that wasn’t meant to be. Not only has she called this election two months prior, but she has seen her party’s popularity hurtle down the tubes as she evades the media, makes strange facial expressions and u-turns on several Tory manifesto policies. Her nemesis Jeremy Corbyn is now seeming to be a credible threat to the once cast iron ‘nouveau’ Iron Lady of the 21st Century.

As Jeremy Corbyn reveals appealing manifesto policies, such as cancelling new student debt and free tuition fees, whilst promising the protection of pensions, Theresa May gives no such reassurances. The Tory’s seem to be on self-destruct mode but is this nihilistic approach more calculated than we’d first have thought. Some have accused the party of deliberately sabotaging their chances because Brexit is an insurmountable disaster that they don’t want anything to do with. Given that George Osborne and Theresa May were both initially pro-EU the tectonic plates of political discourse seem to lack any integrity.

Apathy is now creating a fog that is preventing the electorate from seeing the wood from the trees and more to the point what will be the outcome for Scotland? Still shackled to a Union that appears to put the concept of Britishness above the will of the electorate. Northern Ireland also faces a position of dismay as they may well be wrenched out of the European Union against their will.

On meeting Theresa May for a spot of dinner and a chat about Brexit, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claud Junker made reference to the fact that the British government appear to be ‘living in a different galaxy’. This, of course, is accurate for most political figures these days. If anything, to us plebs, they appear to be circumnavigating some distant nebula searching for Will Robinson. Whose to say what the outcome of our new snap election that wasn’t meant to be will be? One

Whose to say what the outcome of our new snap election that wasn’t meant to be will be? One thing is for sure we all have election fatigue to such extent that we’re beginning to see a haze of an oasis in the distance filled with liquid ecstasy and vodka.
