Calling one’s mother to recount a first workday is a common rite of passage, but Melissa Rauch’s experience was uniquely mortifying. The 44-year-old actress, who joined “The Big Bang Theory” in 2009 as Bernadette Rostenkowski, found herself in an unexpectedly awkward situation during her early days on set.

During a 2013 appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”, Rauch candidly shared her embarrassing first-episode incident. While shooting a scene in a hotel room bed, she instinctively behaved as she would in her personal life – pulling covers high and warming her hands.
“I’m always cold under covers,” she explained, “so I tend to warm my hands like a boy scout starting a fire.” However, this habitual gesture took an unintended turn during filming.

With a live studio audience present, Rauch’s hand movements underneath the covers caught the attention of the director and producer. “We need to see your hands,” they told her. “It looked like you were having way too much fun with yourself.”
The situation escalated when a young audience member approached her after the show, innocently asking why she had shot the scene differently.
Understandably mortified, Rauch called her mother – the inspiration behind Bernadette’s distinctive voice. Her mother’s reaction was predictably dramatic: “I hope people understand you weren’t really doing that! People have been fired for less!”
The incident became a running joke, with Rauch’s mother repeatedly warning her to “keep your hands to yourself” during subsequent work stories.
What began as an innocent attempt to stay warm turned into an unforgettable first-day mishap for the actress, providing an amusing anecdote that would likely be remembered long after the show’s conclusion.
